23 Collages – booklet

It has arrived! My new booklet containing the whole series of “23 Collages” is back from the printers and available to buy in the shop.

This work is a series of 23 collages of images and text taken from National Geographic Magazines from 1978 and 1979 (the first year of my life).

I am interested in how experiences shape who we are and what we believe; how we create our own realities or come to create a seemingly stable image of self and the world around us from a tangle of incomplete, inaccurate memories of past experience. How does this self-created “reality” effect how we interpret new information, how we perceive the world and how we interact with others.

I see collage as a way of revealing the subconscious. Similar to the experience of dreams, images trigger fleeting sensations that seem to hold meaning. This series of collages have no intended meaning. Images and text were selected and coupled quickly, automatically, without question or analysis. As the viewer looks at the work they feel compelled to create meaning, to try to understand. The more they attempt to do this, the further the truth retreats as confirmation bias takes hold, imposes order to chaos and presents it as reality. Through this process the work encourages us to question how we impose meaning on the world and challenges the validity of the interpretations we make.
